Three days is enough to see the capital, fly to Kaieteur Falls and get onto a river. Spend day one walking Georgetown, day two at Kaieteur, and day three on a dawn boat trip on the Mahaica River to see the hoatzin, Guyana’s national bird. Keep Kaieteur on day two so weather delays can roll into day three.
At a glance
- Where: Georgetown, Kaieteur National Park and the Mahaica River on the East Coast of Demerara
- Getting there: fly into Cheddi Jagan International (GEO); Kaieteur flights leave from Ogle airport in Georgetown
- Time needed: three full days, plus arrival and departure
- Cost: varies; ask for a current quote
- Best for: first-time visitors, diaspora returning with friends, anyone adding Guyana to a Caribbean trip
How should you plan 3 days in Guyana?
Book the Kaieteur flight first. It is the only part of this plan that depends on weather and minimum passenger numbers. Everything else can move around it.
If Kaieteur slips from day two, swap it with day three. That is why the river trip sits last: it can be done any morning, and Georgetown can be squeezed into an afternoon. Avoid booking Kaieteur on the same day as your flight home.
Day 1: What should you do in Georgetown?
Start early, before the heat. Georgetown is flat, laid out on a grid and easy to walk in the morning.
- Stabroek Market: the big iron market by the Demerara River, opened in 1881, with its clock tower. Go for produce, spices and street snacks. Keep your phone and bag close.
- St. George’s Cathedral: one of the tallest wooden churches in the world, at 43.5 metres (143 feet), completed in the 1890s.
- City Hall and the Avenue: Victorian Gothic wooden buildings near the cathedral and along Main Street.
- Lunch: try cook-up rice, roti and curry, or pepperpot, a slow-cooked meat stew darkened with cassareep (a cassava syrup).
- Botanical Gardens: an easy afternoon. Manatees live in the ponds here; late afternoon is cooler for walking.
- Seawall at sunset: walk the sea defence along the Atlantic, where Georgetowners lime (hang out) in the evening.
A guided city tour covers most of this in half a day if you prefer a driver. See our Georgetown things to do guide for more.
Day 2: How do you do Kaieteur Falls in a day?
Take a morning or midday flight from Ogle. Planes are small, often around 12 seats, and the flight takes about an hour each way. Pilots usually circle the falls so both sides of the cabin get a view.
On the ground you get about 1.5 to 2 hours. A park guide walks you about 20 minutes over uneven ground to three lookouts over the 226-metre (741-foot) drop. There are no railings, so stay with the guide.
Pack light: a rain jacket, insect repellent, water and grippy shoes. Bags are weight-limited on small aircraft. Some trips add Orinduik Falls, where you can swim, which makes it a longer day.
Back in Georgetown by late afternoon, keep the evening easy. Read the Kaieteur Falls guide for the trail, wildlife and safety detail.
Day 3: What is the best half-day trip from Georgetown?
A dawn boat ride on the Mahaica River, east of the city along the coast road. Tours pick you up well before dawn so you reach the river at first light, when birds are active.
The target is the hoatzin, locally called the Canje pheasant: a large, crested, leaf-eating bird that smells faintly of manure, which is why it is also called the stinkbird. You will likely see kingfishers, herons and hawks too. Most tours run about six hours including breakfast, and include a guide and binoculars.
You are back in Georgetown by early afternoon. Use the rest of the day for anything you missed: the Umana Yana (a tall thatched benab, or open-sided Amerindian meeting house, built without nails), the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, or a long lunch.
What if your Kaieteur flight is cancelled?
Move Kaieteur to day three and do the river trip on day two. If day three fails too, ask the operator about a refund or credit. Don’t push it to departure day unless your international flight is in the evening and the operator agrees the timing works.
Good alternatives for a lost day: a boat trip on the Essequibo River, a city tour you skipped, or the Botanical Gardens and Seawall at a slower pace.
What should you pack for 3 days in Guyana?
- Light, breathable clothes and one long-sleeved layer
- Shoes with grip for wet rock at Kaieteur
- Rain jacket or poncho, any month
- Insect repellent and high-factor sunscreen
- A small dry bag or waterproof phone case
- Some Guyanese dollars in cash for markets and small shops
FAQ
Is 3 days enough for Guyana? It is enough for Georgetown, Kaieteur and one river trip. The Rupununi savannahs and interior lodges need at least three or four more days.
Do I need a tour to see Kaieteur? Practically, yes. Flights, the park fee and the guide come together as a package, and there is no road for day visitors.
When is the best time for this itinerary? It works year-round. The Kaieteur flight is more likely to slip in heavy rain, so keep the spare day whatever the month.
Can I do Kaieteur and the Mahaica River on the same day? No. The river trip starts before dawn and Kaieteur takes most of the day, so split them.
