History and what makes it special
Carnival in St Kitts goes back to 1957, when Basil Henderson called a meeting at Warner Park in September and the first queen show, calypso show and street parade followed by the end of that year. In 1971 it was reorganised as a national festival under a committee reporting to the Minister responsible for Culture, which is why this season is numbered 55. The name is widely understood as a nod to the island’s sugar-growing past, and the timing is what makes it different from most Caribbean carnivals: it runs through Christmas and into the New Year.
That Christmas timing grew out of the older “Christmas Sports”, the street performances that filled the days between Christmas and New Year. You will still see them at Sugar Mas, and they are the heart of the festival:
- Masquerade: troupes of 10–15 dancers in colourful costumes and masks, led by a Captain. The most popular of the traditions today.
- Moko Jumbies: stilt walkers towering over the crowd.
- The Bull: a comic street play with characters such as Davis, Sweetie and Dr Pick-me-Heel.
- Actors, Mummies and Clowns: acrobats, costumed players and the famous clown troupes.
The festival keeps getting bigger. Organisers reported that Sugar Mas 54 drew more than 10,000 people to J’ouvert and more than 5,000 to the Grand Parade.

Tips for going
- Book early. Christmas and New Year are peak season, and flights and rooms fill fast.
- Pick your nights. If you can only catch a few events, aim for J’ouvert on 26 December, Panorama on 27 December and the Grand Parade on 1 January.
- Dress for J’ouvert. It starts before sunrise and gets messy with paint and powder, so wear old clothes and closed shoes.
- Want to play mas? Troupes and bands sell costumes and T-shirt packages ahead of the season; follow the official pages for band launches.
- Look for the traditional troupes. The Masquerade and Moko Jumbies are the soul of Sugar Mas, so stop and watch when they pass.
- Carry small notes in EC dollars for food stalls, and keep water and sun protection handy for the daytime parades.
- Check the official Facebook page for show times, ticket releases and any changes.
Where to stay and getting around
Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) is just outside Basseterre, so the capital and the nearby Frigate Bay area are the easiest bases for carnival: you can reach the shows and parades quickly and get back after late nights. Nevis is a short ferry ride away if you want quieter days between events. Taxis are easy to find; agree the fare before you ride, and expect road closures in Basseterre on parade days.
Many visitors connect through Antigua. If you are adding a stop there, browse our Antigua & Barbuda directory.
